So you’re thinking about renovating your pond, but you have 100 beautiful koi that you have had for years. You know it will take two weeks to renovate and it is also August, the hottest time of the year. “What will happen to my prize pets while you renovate their home?

Been There Dug That!

I did a project in the Love Ladies section of Long Beach Island where this exact situation occurred. The client wanted to renovate his pond and had $60,000 in koi that had to be safely kept during the two week construction period.

Here’s how it went

This was a beach front property that had nowhere to set up a temporary tank for the fish. We made a spot in the beds where we set up a 2,500 gallon holding tank. See holding tank to left of gazebo and pond behind gazebo.

Next we drained the pond down to 1 foot, and used four men and three special koi nets to catch the fish without ever touching them (you know how “touchy” koi can be!)

We then set up a full filtration system in our holding tank and tested the water daily to ensure the health of the fish.

After completion of the project, we put the fish in their new home. NO casualties and everyone was happy!

Healthy Fish

When doing a pond renovation we realize that it’s important to treat the fish right! We took numerous precautions before, during and after the transportation of these expensive fish to ensure their health and well being.
